About Lumera

The Origins

Lumera was founded in October of 2000 to develop high-performance optical network components using electro-optic polymer materials. The technology of the materials was based on intellectual property developed by University of Washington professors, Dr. Larry Dalton and Dr. Bruce Robinson--both widely acknowledged as being world leaders in the development of electro-optic materials development.

As the company progressed, Lumera was able to get initial funding which eventually led to a successful IPO in July of 2004.

The Drive

Lumera continues to focus on products for high-speed optical switching applications. Lumera applies its core competency in nano-engineered electro-optic polymers to develop components with some of the most impressive capabilities in the market. Lumera's electro-optic polymer modulators boast some of the fastest switching speeds with the lowest drive voltages and optical losses in the industry, enabling system integrators to overcome serious problems while designing systems that will keep up with an ever increasing demand for bandwidth.

Lumera's Millimeter Wave Communication System, which makes use of Lumera’s modulators, addresses the growing need for wireless ultra-high data rate transfer for satellite communication, wireless enterprise networks, and extending existing fiber networks.

The Evolution

As Lumera evolved, it became clear that its organic polymers also had compelling applications in the field of bioscience. In 2006, Lumera formed two distinct business units for bioscience and electro-optics. A year later, this led to the formation of a wholly owned subsidiary, Plexera Bioscience LLC. Plexera is focused on providing the life sciences market with tools, content, and methods to simplify and accelerate proteomic discovery for therapeutic antibodies as well as predictive biomarkers.

The Substance

Today, Lumera is a company of about 60 people – one third of whom are PhD’s. Intellectual property consisting of over 70 patents has given Lumera a significant advantage over competitors.
